Why I Stopped Telling MSME Owners to Use the Samadhaan Portal

For years, my advice was the same as everyone else's. Payment stuck? File on the MSME Samadhaan portal. Government-backed, interest added, buyer summoned — the clean, official way to get your money without sending a scary legal notice.

I don't say that anymore. Here's what changed my mind.

A payment's been stuck for months. You've followed up, softly, more times than you can count. Nothing. Then someone — your accountant, a friend, some WhatsApp forward — mentions the Samadhaan portal. And it feels like the clean option. The official one. The one that isn't burning any bridges.

Except it is. From your customer's side of the table, it lands almost exactly like a legal notice — because that's basically what it is.

What "just filing a complaint" looks like to the other guy

You see a form on a government website. He sees a formal notice land, naming him as a defaulter, with a whole conciliation-and-arbitration process attached and interest piling up.

There's a case number now. His name is in a proceeding.

You think you took the polite route. He thinks you dragged him to court.

And honestly, he's not wrong. Samadhaan is a real legal process — a good one, and for genuinely bad-faith buyers who'll never pay otherwise, you absolutely should use it. But it's not a gentle nudge. It's the nuclear option with better branding. The second that notice lands, the relationship is pretty much done. You might get this one payment. You almost certainly won't get the next order.

For a lot of MSMEs that's a terrible trade. That customer was doing ₹40 lakh a year with you. You just torched a lakh-a-month relationship to recover four lakh — money you'd probably have gotten anyway with a bit more structure.

Why owners reach for it anyway

Not because they're aggressive. The opposite, really.

They reach for it because they've run out of other moves. When your only two options are "keep sending awkward WhatsApps that get ignored" or "go legal," and the WhatsApps clearly aren't working, going legal starts to look like the only thing left. There's no middle gear.

That's the actual problem. It was never nice-versus-firm. It's that most small businesses have nothing between a soft reminder and a formal complaint. So the payment sits, and sits, and eventually the frustration tips over into the one hard option available — and a good customer becomes a former customer.

The middle gear is the whole point

Big companies almost never end up filing formal complaints. Not because their customers pay faster — because they've got a system that keeps things from getting that bad in the first place.

Reminders on a fixed rhythm — day 3, day 7, day 15 — automatic, calm, going out before frustration builds. It never feels personal to the customer, because it obviously isn't. It's just process. And process doesn't wreck relationships the way a legal notice does.

That middle gear is exactly what we built the collection engine at FinClick 360 to be. It sends the reminders for you, on the channels your customer actually reads — a WhatsApp with the amount and a payment link, an email for the record, an SMS as backup. And for the parties who ignore messages entirely, it can even do a polite AI voice call, confirming the amount and asking when to expect payment — so you never have to be the uncomfortable voice on the phone to someone you're friendly with.

Firm, consistent, completely un-emotional. Which is exactly why it works and keeps the relationship intact.

Keep the portal for the ones who deserve it

None of this means Samadhaan is bad. For the buyer who's genuinely taking you for granted, it's the right hammer. But it shouldn't be your first move just because nothing else was around.

Most of your pending payments aren't bad-faith. They're customers who slipped, got busy, and never felt enough steady pressure to put you first. Those people don't need a legal notice. They need a system that keeps reminding them until they pay — without ever making it personal.

Save the portal for the ones who truly earned it. For everyone else, there's finally a gear in between.
